Double Fortified Salt:

In a concerted effort to address the pervasive issues of iron and iodine deficiencies, several states in India have embarked on a commendable journey of scaling up the utilization of double-fortified salt. This strategic intervention aims to deliver essential daily doses of iodine and iron, vital micronutrients crucial for optimal health and development.

The proactive measures taken by state governments are evident, with notable initiatives such as the integration of double-fortified salt into the public food distribution system in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh since 2018. Similarly, Tamil Nadu has been at the forefront, distributing double-fortified salt to school children as part of their mid-day meal program since 2004.

The significance of double-fortified salt lies in its ability to provide incremental yet indispensable amounts of iodine and iron. Iodine plays a pivotal role, particularly in the critical stages of brain development for pregnant women and young children. Meanwhile, iron deficiency remains a widespread concern, contributing to half of all anaemia cases worldwide, debilitating energy levels and hindering active participation within family and community settings.

Salt’s cost-effectiveness as a vehicle for micronutrient delivery is well-established, making the introduction of double-fortified salt a pivotal milestone in promoting the health and well-being of women, adolescent girls, and young children.
